The Fattoria di Caspri winery is located in the rolling hills of rural Tuscany just south of Florence, between the cities of Siena and Arezzo. This 7 hectare vineyard, together with 9 hectares of olive groves, still preserves all the fascination of the region's ancient history. In fact, within it stands an ancient 18th-century building, recently restored, which in the past was the home of noble families. It was also once the home of General Aelianus Caspérius, whose name the winery still bears. The estate was officially inaugurated in 2007, when Bertrand Habsiger, a well-known Alsatian enologist, decided to embark on a new adventure in the Tuscan lands after having spent a long time studying the area. And so this Tuscan winery with a French spirit was born, blending the elegance and class of Alsace with the rusticity and spontaneity of these lands.
The Fattoria di Caspri winery chose right from the very beginning to adopt biodynamic viticulture, which would preserve the spontaneity of the land and therefore strengthen the natural relationship between man, land and vineyard. The objective is to obtain real concentrates of Tuscany, which are pure, healthy and genuine, and which reveal the magic of these places in every sip. The vines belong to the ancient local history, and so red grapes, such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo, and other white varieties, such as Malvasia and Trebbiano, are grown. In addition to this Tuscan production, Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Noir, which are French grapes, are also grown, strengthening the French-Italian bond that characterises the winery's work. In the vineyard, all use of chemical and synthetic substances is banned, in an attempt to preserve the full identity of the terroir. This sensitive approach is the first step towards very respectful work in the cellar, where spontaneous fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in drained wooden barrels and no invasive intervention such as filtering or clarification is carried out.
The wines of Caspri are typically Tuscan and display a lean and elegant profile. They are produced in a very suitable terroir characterised by a semi-continental climate, influenced by sea breezes, and poor soil with sand, limestone and small percentages of decomposed gneiss. The delicate freshness, the light and pleasant tannin, the low alcohol content and the very smooth drinkability balance the wild and rough note, which is typical of Tuscany. Sangiovese is certainly the mainstay of the winery and creates several different wines, such as the extraordinary "Poggio Cuccole" and the lighter "Rosso di Caspri". The 'Luna Blu', which is a splendid orange wine with an iridescent and straightforward tone, is also well worth tasting. All in all, Caspri is ideal for those who want to experience biodynamic French wines in Tuscany!
