Building on a family winemaking tradition of more than 500 years, the Weingut Josef Milz is an expert and faithful interpreter of the noble Mosel wine region. The winery, founded back in 1520 in the historic centre of the municipality of Trittenheim on the banks of the Mosel River, was in 1910 one of the founding houses of the VDP, a classification system for German quality wines. Today, the estate's vineyards are spread over four different areas around the village of Trittenheim: Trittenheimer Apotheke, Trittenheimer Leiterchen, Trittenheimer Felsenkopf and Drohner Hofberg. The latter is included in the municipality of Neumagen-Dhron, located less than 5 kilometres north of the town of Treittenheim, along the Mosel River.

The little more than 6 hectares of vineyards cultivated by the Weingut Josef Milz are almost entirely dedicated to Rhine Riesling, a varietal emblem of Germany and in particular of the Mosel region. The plants, 80% of which are over 35 years old, grow on very steep slopes, often characterised by such steep slopes that they require the use of exclusively manual agronomic operations. The steep slopes also favour exposure to the sun and the accumulation of heat in the soil, a factor that is all the more accentuated by the grey-blue slate that characterises the soils around Treittenheim. The exception is the Drohner Hofberg area, which consists of reddish soils rich in iron oxide. In the wine cellar, stainless steel tanks are used for fermentation and maturation, with the exception of a few wines that are also matured in Burgundian oak barrels of several passages, always with a use of wood that does not prevail over the expression of the terroir and the grape variety;

The Rieslings from the Josef Milz cellar are endowed with a vibrant, crystal-clear minerality, an element of character that contributes to the refined complexity of the wines. Although the production is not quantitatively large, the estate produces various types of Riesling, from dry ones such as the Trocken '180°' to sweet ones such as the Spӓtlese Grosse Lage Apotheke 'Magna Charta'.
