Elena Walch is one of the most important personalities in South Tyrolean wine. Her winery is located in the heart of the small village of Tramin and has retained a typically artisanal character. Today Elena is joined in the work by her two daughters Julia and Karoline, who represent the fifth generation of a family of winemakers. Thanks to her love of her land and her passion for the traditions of the area, Elena Walch has been instrumental in the renaissance of South Tyrolean wine, gearing her production toward a range of high-quality labels. Today her estate represents a solid point of reference for all wine lovers and a model of a company that has been able to make the most of the characteristics of the territory, through the production of a range of excellent wines.
The property covers an area of 60 hectares, divided into numerous parcels, selected among the most vocated in the territory. Within the estate, two historic vineyards stand out in particular, which are considered among the finest in the region. The Castel Ringberg vineyard is located at an altitude of about 330 meters above sea level, near Lake Caldaro, and at 20 hectares is Elena Walch's largest estate. The soils are of ancient morainic origin, composed of sands, limestone rubble and clays. The climate, mitigated by the presence of the lake, is perfect for grape growing and in particular for: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Lagrein. The Kastelaz Vineyard has always been known for quality. It is located above Tramin, 360 meters above sea level, and its terraces are beautifully exposed to noon. The rocky soil, composed of granite and porphyry, has proven very suitable for growing Gewürztraminer and Merlot.
The estate's philosophy is geared toward enhancing the terroir and producing wines that faithfully reflect its traditions and characteristics. To achieve this, work in the vineyard is carried out with the utmost respect for nature, following environmental sustainability protocols. No herbicides are used and the inter-rows are grassed and sown with legumes to increase the vitality of the soils. In the winery, very strict rules are followed, favoring winemaking made with minimal oenological intervention. In addition to agronomic and cellar management, winery also annually draws up a CO2 balance sheet to reduce overall emissions and limit the impact on the overall ecosystem. Elena Walch's wines are prized for their respect for the varietal characteristics of the grapes, elegance, freshness and finesse.
