Magnum Wines

The Magnum bottle is the perfect choice for special occasions. It generally identifies a rather rare and limited format that has a capacity of 1.5 litres, which is twice as large as the traditional 0.75 litre bottle. There are several reasons for choosing a Magnum wine: first and foremost, it is an excellent investment for parties and events, as well as an unexpected gift to surprise friends, relatives and someone special. Besides making a dramatic impression, some studies have demonstrated that large formats are of superior quality, as they allow the wine to evolve more slowly and counteract oxidation processes more effectively. This is due to the superior ratio between the volume of the liquid and the surface area that is exposed to the air. On Callmewine you can find a vast selection of the best wines in the Magnum format.

What is a Magnum Bottle?

Originally derived from the Latin Magnus meaning "big", this is a large bottle format with a capacity of one and a half litres, which is less than the Jeroboam, and roughly twice the size of the more common 0.75 litre bottle. It is normally only used in the best vintages to produce small quantities, making it a rare and scarcely available product.

Generally these bottles are more expensive than two standard sized bottles, mainly because of their rarity and the high production and transport costs. Over time, they have become synonymous with luxury, charm and wealth, and are usually uncorked for large events or parties.

For all wine lovers, Callmewine offers a wide selection of Magnum wines on offer at discounted prices. Discover red wines, white wines, sparkling wines and champagnes in large sizes and order them directly from the comfort of your home.

So Why Choose It?

First of all, it is guaranteed to taste better than a classic bottle, as it matures more slowly. In fact, the contact between liquid and oxygen is the driving force behind the evolution of a bottle. As a result, the size of the bottle plays a very important role, as a larger area of contact allows the wine to mature faster and vice versa. Therefore, a 1.5-litre bottle, which is twice the size of a traditional bottle, has less air in contact with the liquid surface, which ensures optimal maturation.

Secondly, a Magnum is always a very appreciated gift and makes a great impression, also from an aesthetic point of view.

Thirdly, it is a bottle that evokes major events, such as anniversaries, the birth of a child, weddings, birthdays and numerous others. For this reason, on these memorable occasions people invest in Magnum wines of particular vintages and types, such as Champagne, Brunello or Barolo.

Finally, they are rare and exclusive products, as they are produced in limited numbers or only in the best vintages chosen by the producer.

The Large Bottle Sizes

In addition to the Magnum, there are even larger bottle sizes on the market. These are the most famous:

  • Jeroboam has a capacity of 3 litres (4 standard bottles).
  • Rehoboam has a capacity of 4.5 litres (6 standard bottles)
  • Mathusalem has a capacity of 6 litres (8 standard bottles)
  • Salmanazar has a capacity of 9 litres (12 standard bottles)
  • Balthazar has a capacity of 12 litres (16 standard bottles)
  • Nabuchodonosor has a capacity of 15 litres (20 standard bottles)
  • Melchior has a capacity of 18 litres (24 standard bottles)
  • Solomon has a capacity of 20 litres
  • Sovereign has a capacity of 25 litres
  • Primat has a capacity of 27 litres
  • Malchizedec has a capacity of 30 litres

When reading the names, you will find many references to the great biblical kings. These names are not accidental, and are actually linked to the magnificence and opulence of these ancient rulers, to whom the traders have dedicated the names of their products.
