Jacopo Biondi Santi is the heir and successor to one of the most illustrious names in Italian wine. He is in fact the son of Franco, the gentleman of Brunello, and the man who made the Tenuta il Greppo winery in Montalcino a great international reference point. Today, alongside the famous Montalcino estate, Jacopo also manages the vast properties of the historic Castello di Montepò winery, just south of Grosseto, in the heart of the Maremma region. This personal and subjective challenge began in 1991 and has led to the creation of straightforward and immediately comprehensible territorial interpretations that represent an international and modern style. On the one hand, Jacopo is well aware that he belongs to one of the most historic families in the world of wine in Italy, and on the other, he has an enterprising personality that wants to express his own vision of the future regardless of a glorious past, bringing into play his strong entrepreneurial skills.
The estate of the Castello di Montepò winery owned by Jacopo Biondi Santi has a truly remarkable size, covering nearly 220 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are spread over a range of slopes and foothills, running from the north and east towards the plains of Albinia and the Tyrrhenian coast. Each plot obviously has different exposures and altitudes, reaching as high as 500 metres. The microclimate is, in general, breezy and dry, with significant temperature swings between day and night, which is ideal for quality wine growing. The subsoils have a considerable mineral richness, characterised by a strong presence of shale. Between the rows of vines, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, of course, Sangiovese, the grape variety that has made the family's fortune, are cultivated. Every step in the process is followed and monitored with great care by the winery team, just as in every phase of vinification and ageing.
The Jacopo Biondi Santi winery is a producer that, every year, releases several red wines of the highest level, which are the result of the high winemaking potential of the Maremma area. The Castello di Montepò represents one of the oldest and most important historical sites in the area, which was also recognised by the novelist Graham Greene, and the labels produced preserve this unmistakably Tuscan charm. Among the different wines, the "Sassoalloro" elegantly interprets the Sangiovese, offering a taste that is both full-bodied and elegant.
