Il Pettirosso Valtellina Superiore of Ar.Pe.Pe. is a Valtellina red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes, locally called Chiavennasca. From the seemingly simple organoleptic profile, it expresses faithfully the terroir of Valtellina, playing on the nose on fine and elegant notes of fresh dark fruit and brandied cherries, with tips of humus and undergrowth. On the other hand, the mouthfeel is distinct, of great harmony and with strong mineral and savoury hints, framed by a long, fresh and spicy finish
Ar.Pe.Pe.'s Valtellina Superiore 'Il Pettirosso' is a red wine made from Chiavennasca grapes, the local name for Nebbiolo in Valtellina. It is a mountain wine that favours freshness, elegance and expressive finesse over concentration. It is a version of Nebbiolo that is faithful to the terroir, perfectly in line with its characteristics and with the philosophy of Cantina Arpepe, which has always been committed to enhancing the special characteristics of this splendid Alpine valley with its ancient traditions.
The red Valtellina Superiore 'Il Pettirosso' is produced by the Ar.Pe.Pe winery. Founded in 1984 by Arturo Pellizzatti Perego, it stems from the desire to produce great wines that are a direct expression of the territory and capable of highlighting the noble characteristics of mountain Nebbiolo. The estate covers a total of 13 hectares divided into various plots located in the areas of: Sassella, Grumello and Inferno. The Valtellina is one of the very few Alpine valleys with an east-west orientation, which allows for a splendidly south-facing slope. It is precisely by working the steep mountain slopes with terracing and dry-stone walls that vine cultivation has developed over the centuries. It is a heroic vine-growing, with working and harvesting all done by hand, requiring a lot of effort and many hours of work. The vines are located at an altitude of between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, on soils rich in skeleton and with often outcropping mother rock. Harvesting takes place in the second half of October and the grapes ferment in 50-hectolitre wooden vats with maceration on the skins for about 3 months and the use of only indigenous yeasts. The wine rests in 50 hectolitre wooden vats and casks for 12 months.
Ar.Pe.Pe.'s Valtellina Superiore "Il Pettirosso" is an ideal label to get to know how Nebbiolo expresses itself in the Valtellina territory and to appreciate its special mountain characteristics. The wine has a garnet red colour. On the nose it expresses a bouquet of small berries, cherries, fruit under spirits, liquorice root and delicate spices. The sip is long and intense, with complex aromas, a fine, evolved tannic texture and a pleasantly fresh finish.
