Castelvecchio Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a red from the Gorizia Karst, an area that has always had a vocation for quality viticulture. A label that presents the typical warmth that Refosco usually brings to tastings, in which one can also appreciate the ethereal background that gradually becomes more important on the nose. A bottle in which character and personality abound, in which the story of an ancient and important native Friulian grape variety is told.
The Castelvecchio winery makes Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso wine from vineyards in the Karst Natural Park. We find ourselves in a terroir rich in limestone rock and red soil, where minerals abound; between the rows, the Bora wind blows, responsible for a climate strongly characterised by temperature excursions between day and night. Fermentation of the must take place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks thanks to the presence of indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then transferred to barriques and large French oak casks for ageing, which lasts a total of 24 months, and before release, there is a further six months of maturation carried out directly in the glass.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso di Castelvecchio reveals itself to the eye with a typically ruby colour, characterised by deep impenetrability. Small red and black berries open up on the nose with intense notes, while more ethereal, nuanced hints can also be perceived on the finish. Soft and warm the entry into the mouth, endowed with a nice persistence, in which a slightly bitter-tasting sip develops. A label on the table says its piece with roasts and game, generally enhancing the cuisine of the Friuli region.
