Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva from the Tuscan winery Boscarelli represents a dark and articulate interpretation of this historic appellation from the Montepulciano district. The Riserva was re-produced starting with the 2010 vintage after nearly 20 years of careful selection and replanting in historic vineyards. Following a few attempts to combine Sangiovese, in the local clone of Prugnolo Gentile, with international vines such as Merlot and Cabernet, since 2010, the Riserva has been re-proposed exclusively with local vines, as in the 1970s and 1980s.
Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva consists of a blend of Prugnolo Gentile (90%) and Colorino (10%), varieties grown in Poderi Boscarelli's historic vineyards in Cervognano. Here the soils are calcareous and sandy, of alluvial origin, with a good presence of silt, clay and mineral elements, also rich in stony skeleton. The vines are more than 20 years old, and manual harvesting is accompanied by careful selection of the grapes, which are then destemmed and mashed in oak vats for spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, associated with about 10 to 15 days of maceration on the skins with daily punching down and pumping over. Next, the mass is racked into French and Slavonian oak barrels ranging in size from 5 to 25 hectoliters for the complete malolactic fermentation and 28-32 months of ageing that precedes bottling.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Boscarelli Riserva di Montepulciano is deep and brilliant ruby red in colour. The nose evokes seductive aromas of blueberry, plum, violet and iris that combine with complex spicy sensations. Elegant and pleasantly fruity, the taste is slightly tannic and with good flavour persistence.
