Villa de Puppi's Merlot was born in Moimacco in the province of Udine. The de Puppi family has been cultivating these territories for generations, descending from the Conti Guidi, lords of Poppi, who fled from Florence and took refuge in these areas to escape the conflicts between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Dante Alighieri already mentioned them in his Divine Comedy, extolling their prestige and power. From 1800 they began to devote themselves to wine production, handing down knowledge and tradition from generation to generation, producing wines of refined quality. In 1991 there was a radical renovation of the historic manor buildings in order to modernize winery techniques. The working philosophy is to preserve tradition, enhancing the intrinsic quality of the land and raw material with an innovative and forward-looking spirit.
Villa de Puppi's Merlot vineyards stand on soils mainly composed of Eocene marly stone and pebbles for wines with a structured character. They extend for about 10 hectares on the Colline di Rosazzo with a cold climate in winter with snow phenomena and sudden frosts even in early spring; in summer, temperatures are not high, with good sunshine between the rows for full ripening of the grapes at harvest time. The grapes are harvested manually, and then the best bunches are selected before they reach the winery. After cold maceration on the skins for a few days, alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel with selected yeasts, ageing 2-3 months in new and used barriques.
To the eye, Villa de Puppi's Merlot appears deep ruby red with bright highlights; the bouquet of aromas is reminiscent of berries such as blueberries, blackberries, currants and wild strawberries. In the mouth, it is soft, enveloping and inviting, with delicate tannins and an overall balanced structure for interesting drinking. In pairing, it is recommended with medium-aged mixed meats, stewed cuts of red meat and risotto with vegetable dressings. Perfect for dinners with lifelong friends to enjoy an authentic product that reflects the history and tradition of a family that has always been dedicated to the world of winemaking.
