Malvasia delle Lipari from the Hauner winery is a sweet, fresh and aromatic raisin wine produced at Lingua on the island of Salina, part of the Aeolian archipelago in Sicily. This label is made from almost pure Malvasia di Lipari grapes, plus a small percentage of Corinto Nero from vineyards with 20 to 35 percent slopes located between 50 and 100 meters above sea level. The vines are trained using the modified guyot espalier method on soils of volcanic origin characterized by limestone soils rich in organic matter and mineral elements. The winery is a family-run business, owning about 20 hectares under vine. It was founded 40 years ago by Brescian designer Carlo Hauner, who made it a reference point for the entire Sicilian and national wine scene.
Hauner's Malvasia Passita delle Lipari is made from carefully selected grapes that are hand-picked late in the year at the time of their full ripeness. The bunches are then left to dry on canizzi in the open air for 15-20 days before being pressed in order to carry out the alcoholic fermentation, which takes place slowly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for several weeks. The wine is then racked and aged for at least 18 months in stainless steel containers before being bottled and continues its maturation in the bottle for an additional six months before release.
Hauner Malvasia presents a beautiful bright amber-yellow colour to the eye. Intense aromas of ripe yellow fruit and dried fruit appear on the nose, including apricot, dried figs and dates, floral notes of chamomile and herbs, spicy hints of sweet spices, then veering into nuances of honey and nougat. In the mouth, it is full, intense, sweet and persuasive, marked by a velvety softness and a great freshness that sustains it giving it stability. This passito from the Hauner winery is an imposing and graceful sweet wine, ample and of great finesse with a pleasantly honeyed and nutty finish.
