Kerner from the South Tyrolean winery Kofererhof is one of the most interesting versions of this typical Eisack Valley varietal, the result of a cross between Riesling and Schiava Grossa. Soils of morainic origin, rich in stones, gravels and sands, and a climate characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between daytime and nighttime temperatures, allow the vine to ripen slowly, with a particularly rich and elegant aromatic complement. Its fruity and spicy notes, accompanied by the freshness typical of mountain wines, give a smooth, taut sip with good aromatic complexity.
The white Kerner is the fruit of the work of one of the Isarco Valley's most highly regarded vignerons. Gunther Kerschbaumer founded the Kofererhof winery in 1995, and in just a few years, he has made a name for himself on the South Tyrolean wine scene with outstanding labels. The estate is located in the Varna area, just above Novacella Abbey. The vineyards are cultivated at an altitude of 600 to 800 meters above sea level. Kerner has adapted well to the cool climate of the valley and yields wines with an excellent balance of fruity aromas and vibrant freshness. After harvest, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Before bottling, the wine matures for at least 8 months in steel tanks.
Kofererhof's Kerner wine is one of the most representative labels of the wonderful Isarco Valley, one of the emerging areas in the panorama of great Italian whites, which is increasingly consolidating its character of excellence. It is a bottle that perfectly interprets the alpine character of the area through the vinification of one of its iconic grape varieties. In the glass, it is bright and brilliant straw yellow in colour. The nose is intense and rich, with aromas of citrus, yellow-fleshed fruit, hints of tropical fruit and soft spicy nuances. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with intense, ripe aromas, well balanced by remarkable freshness and a crisp, savoury streak. The finish is of good length and persistence.
