Gavi by Gavi Etichetta Nera is the flagship wine of the La Scolca estate, produced with strict respect for nature and its cycles through traditional pruning and harvesting methods. In Gavi, Cortese was first planted by Marquis Cambiaso over a century ago with the aim of serving a fine wine to his guests. His example was soon imitated throughout the Gavi area, and it began to be sold, although the winemaking knowledge of the time did not allow for quality, the wines were fragile, and prone to oxidation.
The big Piedmontese wine brands, Cinzano and later Martini & Rossi, began to take an interest in Cortese di Gavi, buying at low prices bulk wine from local producers to use as a base for their sparkling wines. Gavi was forever condemned to be an inferior wine, but after World War II, the History of Cortese turned a new leaf thanks to the Scolca estate, which made a modern, fragrant and pleasant white wine, yet one with great character, that won well-deserved success.
Scolca is thus the symbolic winery for the Gavi area and Etichetta Nera is the ultimate expression of the Cortese grape. The vineyards from which the clusters, which will give life to the "Gavi dei Gavi," come are over sixty years old, synonymous of high quality in the wine world; the yields, in fact, are low but more concentrated, the roots search dozens of meters deep for the nutrients they need, giving the wines greater elegance and complexity, making them almost immortal. This splendid magic of nature is accompanied in the winery by the skillful process of vinification of the Cortese grapes, experience gained from more than ninety harvests. The result is a wine that amazes, with a strong character, but at the same time delicate and harmonious, with excellent freshness, one of the absolute gems for Gavi.
