Galatrona is an important and robust Supertuscan made from Merlot, aged for 15 months in barrique. Noble tannins and intense hints of fruit and spice encapsulate a fascinating, full-bodied structure of great elegance
Galatrona di Petrolo originates in Vald'Arno di Sopra in the lush green province of Arezzo. The present estate was part of the ancient Galatrona fiefdom in the Middle Ages, and the ancient tower and baptismal font by Giovanni della Robbia are evidence of this. The working philosophy is strongly linked to tradition and respect for nature in its phases: only by careful observation of the fruits it offers and their intrinsic qualities will it be possible to transform them in the best possible way, in the belief that wine is the alchemical transformation of nature into culture. Based on these principles, today, the winery operates a scrupulous process of grape selection and low productivity in the vineyard to ensure the healthiness of the plants and grapes.
Petrolo's Galatrona vineyards were planted around the late 1980s. The soil here is optimal for luxuriant growth: clay with marl, alberese and sandstone are found, a condition that ensures that structure, elegance and balance are found in the final product. The cultivation regime chosen is organic and human intervention in the vineyard is reduced to the bare minimum, banning the use of synthetic chemicals and pesticides in favour of integral grassing. Harvesting is conducted manually in boxes, and the best berries are selected on a sorting table. In the cellar, alcoholic fermentation takes place thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks; frequent, gentle pumping-over and a long maceration follow. It is aged in French barriques for 18-20 months with constant battonage for the first 6 months.
The colour of Petrolo's Galatrona is a dark ruby red with bright highlights. The aromas are reminiscent of blueberries, blackberry and wild strawberries in union with notes of fern and walnut. In the mouth, it is structured, elegant and enveloping with a well-present and well-integrated tannin that concerns a pleasant persistence for an intriguing drink. In pairing, it is perfect with grilled and roasted cuts of red meat, local game and pasta dishes dressed with elaborate sauces; also perfect with aged cheeses. An ideal product for romantic evenings in front of the fireplace in winter to enjoy a wine with authentic and genuine flavours.
