The Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba from the celebrated modernist Domenico Clerico estate encapsulates the most balanced and, in some ways, complete essence of the Monforte d'Alba terroir. This Barolo, which is the winery's calling card, was produced for the first time with the 2011 vintage from a blend of Nebbiolo grapes from the best estate plots located within the commune of Monforte d'Alba.
Domenico Clerico Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is a 100% Nebbiolo made from a blend of the best vineyards owned by the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, namely Ginestra, Mosconi and Bussia. The vines, whose planting years range from 2005 for the youngest to 1968 for the oldest, are located at an altitude between 330 and 380 meters above sea level. The soils consist of fossilized St. Agatha Marls dating from the Tortonian, while the exposure is east and southeast. In the winery, the grapes are mounded in vertical tanks for alcoholic fermentation, accompanied by 15-20 days of maceration on the skins. Thereafter, the wine ages for 24 months in a combination of large oak barrels and barriques, followed by approximately one year of further bottle ageing before release.
The color of Domenico Clerico's Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is transparent garnet red. The rich olfactory picture is painted by fruity and balsamic aromas of jammy berries and mint, adorned by spicy suggestions of cocoa and pepper. Precise, elegant and austere, the taste progression is marked by excellent freshness and a fine and vigorous tannic texture at the same time that takes leave on persistent fruity, balsamic and spicy sensations consistent with the nose.
