The Sailor Jerry is a spiced rum coming from the US Virgin Islands. Its name derives from the one of the most famous tattoo artist of the last century art, namely Norman Collins, aka "Sailor Jerry". Jerry has lived most of his life on ships and his base was in Hawaii, where his famous "sailor" tattoo style became soon an inimitable icon all over the world. On the glamorous bottle of Sailor Jerry rum there is in fact one of his lovely pin-up while playing the ukulele.
It was the same tattoo artist to leave the recipe of his personal rum, purchased and implemented then by William Grant & Sons. The mixture consists of a selection of rum distilled in the Caribbean and especially the addition of four spices - cinnamon, clove, vanilla and ginger - plus an infusion of lime. The addition of spices in the rum is an old tradition of the sailors cause the first rums were very strong and spices tended to improve the flavor of the product.
Sailor Jerry has quickly became a cult product of many international underground subcultures, among all the surfers: it is in fact the most sold spiced rum in California. The precision with which the parts of rum are chosen is the same with which Sailor Jerry carried out his art. The recipe, in fact, takes shape as a result of travel and long researches that every year the William Grant & Sons team performs, taking the route to the Caribbean, exploring the distilleries in search of the finest rums. Maybe you have not had the opportunity to make you get a tattoo from Norman, but drink his rum could always leave quite a mark.
