Verdicchio di Matelica "Mirum" from the Marche winery La Monacesca is an intense and elegant white wine. It is the Verdicchio that does not see the sea, born in the innermost and coolest valley of Matelica. This area expresses itself with a different character than in the classic Jesi area and gives refined floral and herbal aromas, ripe fruit and a sip characterized by a vibrant freshness. The long ageing in steel gives us back a rich and evolved white but with great varietal typicity. A great wine, excellent to drink immediately, but also possesses extraordinary ageing potential.
La Monacesca's white "Mirum" is one of the most interesting and prestigious versions of Verdicchio di Matelica. The production area constitutes a unicum in the Marche region. While all the valleys descend from the Apennines to the sea on the west-east axis, the Matelica Valley is completely surrounded by mountains and is the only one with a north-south development. The climate is not affected by sea breezes and is continental, with cold winters and large temperature ranges between day and motte, even in the summer months. The soils originated from the uplift of an ancient seabed and have proven to be particularly suitable for the cultivation of Verdicchio. Cantina La Monacesca was established in the mid-1960s and today represents one of the area's key landmarks.
Verdicchio di Matelica "Mirum" comes from the grapes of vines about 30 years old grown in Contrada Monacesca on mainly clayey soils. The clusters are harvested by hand at a slightly overripe stage. The grapes are pressed in a soft manner, and the must ferments in steel at a temperature of 20°C. The wine matures in steel tanks on the fine lees for at least 18 months, also performing malolactic fermentation, and completes ageing within 6 months in the bottle. In the glass, it has a light yellow colour with brilliant reflections. The bouquet expresses aromas of white flowers, ripe fruit aromas, hints of tropical fruit, toasted almond, nuances of star anise and herbs of the Mediterranean scrub. The sip is intense and deep, with a remarkable complexity of flavour, stretching towards a taut and vertical finish of great freshness. The finish is persistent with pleasant, savoury, and mineral sensations. A great interpreter of Verdicchio, La Monacesca has made a name for itself with wines of intense and complex style, capable of bringing to the forefront the best characteristics of the Matelica territory.
