"The New Wave Girl" by Vinos Malaparte is an 'orange' Verdejo with a punk spirit, direct and with no frills. The 'new wave' is the one of small producers in Castilla y Leon who are bringing their artisanal philosophy to the Spanish wine scene. The long maceration in amphora develops aromas of ripe fruit such as peach, then buttermilk and dried fruit. Funky on the palate, slightly tannic and very easy to drink
"The New Wave Girl" is a funky and fun version of Verdejo grapes produced in the highlands of Castilla y Leon. It is a straightforward orange wine full of personality aged only in amphora to express the fragrant and direct side of the grape. The Bodega Vinos Malaparte aims to create wines of great character, pure and sincere, strongly linked to their terroir. Thus the vines are left to grow without the aid of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides, applying the non-interventionist philosophy in the cellar (no filtrations or clarifications) and using what the terroir offers (indigenous yeasts). The long contact with the skins gives a more complex and richer structure, in addition to the classic orange colour, while terracotta amphorae maturation enhances the grapes' fresh and varietal character. The result is a wine of great territorial expressiveness, made as nature intended, without trickery or deception.
The 'New Wave Girl' orange wine comes from 60-year-old Verdejo vines located 900 metres in Cuellar, a small municipality 60 km from Segovia. This area is characterised by a noteworthy temperature range between day and night - even in summer, and it goes from 40° during the day to 10° at night - allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. The vineyards are surrounded by local nature and rest on limestone matrix soils with silica. Vinification and ageing take place in terracotta amphorae.
Malaparte's 'The New Wave Girl' wine displays a luminous garment of veiled orange hues. The olfactory bouquet is rich and fragrant, with notes of citrus, sweet spices, dried fruit, Mediterranean scrub and pleasant hints of peach in syrup. The sip is drinking and flowing, with a pulsating freshness and a light tannic texture punctuating the drink. A true juice of the Castilla territory!
