A passion for viticulture, a commitment to ancient production methods and a strong desire to promote the Maremma region worldwide have allowed the Vanni family to establish the Fattoria San Felo winery in 2001. It is a young producer, although it has clear ideas and a strong desire to grow, invest and get involved. The estate is located in the district of Poggio la Mozza, in the area of Magliano in Toscana which is a small municipality near the town of Grosseto. It is protected by Mount Amiata (of volcanic nature) at its back and situated only a few kilometres from the sea and the Uccellina Regional Park. This is the land of the Morellino di Scansano wine, in a truly evocative landscape where grapes have reigned supreme for centuries between rows of cypress trees and ancient villages. The Maremma area is the gateway to the wildest part of Tuscany and an Etruscan jewel, where the land meets the sea, and where Mediterranean nature, in its thousands of shapes and colours, thrives on legends, history and ancient traditions. Brothers Federico and Lorenzo Vanni know this well, and from the combination of their initials the San Fe-Lo winery was born. This modern venture aims to develop and spread the beauty of this nature through the vineyards that populate it.
The winery extends over a long strip of land in which there are 28 hectares of vineyards planted with the most characteristic grapes of the area. These include the Sangiovese, which occupies the top position, followed by the faithful Viognier, Vermentino, Cabernet, Merlot and Ciliegiolo varieties. What distinguishes the winery is the love, professionalism and passion that the family applies to each step. From the harvest to the last stage of bottling, everything is handled with extreme care. Additionally, in the last few years the cellar has been enlarged and now covers more than 700 square metres. Every year only a few bottles are released, although their quality is remarkable and they are in no way inferior to the great wines of the area, while also being competitively priced.
The wines of San Felo have a distinctive Tuscan feel to them, starting with their names, which were chosen by Federico Vanni who currently runs and manages the winery. "Balla La Vecchia", in addition to being a young Bordeaux blend from the winery, is also a popular expression used by the local villagers to describe the breeze on hot summer days. The same goes for "Dicioccatore", which is an extraordinary Morellino reserve, but is also the term used to identify the old woodcutters who uprooted the stumps. All in all, San Felo is the pride and heart of the Maremma area!
