Among the great producers who have contributed to the extraordinary success of the prestigious Barolo, a special place of honour is certainly reserved for Marchesi di Barolo. A winery that boasts a history of more than 150 years and that still today represents a symbolic and reference brand in the immense Piedmontese enological world. The winery is located in the municipality of Barolo, the only one of the eleven reference municipalities that is not perched on a hill, but rather developed on a flat surface. The extraordinary Castello dei Marchesi stands fearlessly in this tiny village of less than 700 inhabitants. It is a centuries-old palace which, as well as being a local landmark, is also the symbol and origin of Barolo. And it is here that the history of the Marchesi began.

It was the year 1807 when Marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti married the French noblewoman Juliette Colbert Maulévrier, great-granddaughter of the Sun King. Juliette was the first to realise the potential of the Nebbiolo grown in these lands and noticed how the use of wooden barrels brought depth and longevity to the wine. When her husband died at the end of the 19th century, in the absence of heirs, the estate was first run with great courage by his wife and then taken over by Pietro and Ernesto Abbona, two young boys who worked in the cellars at the foot of the castle. From here the stories of the Falletti and Abbona families merged, a destiny that would write the history of one of the most famous and appreciated wines of our peninsula in just a few years. After five generations, the Marchesi di Barolo are still managed by the Abbona family. Anna and Ernesto junior, together with their children, continue to carry on the ancient family traditions, trying to produce high quality wines every year, witnesses of a glorious past and interpreters of innovation and modernity. In fact, the new family has led the winery towards innovation, opening the door to new foreign markets, without ever giving up the ancient history of the past.

The Marchesi di Barolo winery covers 200 hectares and owns land in the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato areas. A long experience and a historical recipe have led the family to concentrate on native vines, dominated by Nebbiolo, and cultivated on different soils of marl, clay, tuff, sand and sandstone. In addition, a temperate microclimate, protected by the Alps to the north-west and the Apennines to the south, has made this area one of the most suitable in the world. Marchesi di Barolo aims to create unique, high quality wines that interpret the diversity of the area and are faithful reflections of the vintage, terroir and grapes. With a production that counts more than 1 million bottles, there are different types of wines, in addition to the famous Barolo in both traditional and modern styles, Barbareschi and Barbere, Grignolino, Roero Arneis, Moscato d'Asti, Dolcetto and Gavi are produced. A legendary history that continues to enlighten the Langhe!
