Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the most interesting and prestigious wineries in the Maremma, an area of Tuscany that is on the rise and has shown considerable potential in recent decades. The area is very suitable for the cultivation of both Sangiovese and Vermentino, as well as the most famous international red and white grape varieties. The estate was founded in the late 1970s and is now managed with expertise and great love for its land by Elisabetta Geppetti, with the help of her daughter Clara, who joined the company in 2011 and is mainly responsible for foreign markets. The property is located in Piagge Del Maiano, in the province of Grosseto, and covers a total area of 420 hectares, about 80 of which are dedicated to viticulture and the rest covered by forests of holm oaks, oaks, cork oaks, olive groves and Mediterranean scrub, so as to ensure an unspoiled environment rich in biodiversity.
The Maremma occupies the southern part of Tuscany, characterized by gentle hills that slope down to the Tyrrhenian coast. The climate is Mediterranean, particularly warm and mild, cooled only by sea breezes that rise inland, providing optimal conditions for vine cultivation. The estate's vineyards occupy only the most suitable positions and are often far apart, at an altitude of 50 to 280 meters above sea level. The soils are rather heterogeneous, but tend to be medium-textured, sandy loam and clay, with the presence of abundant sandstone skeleton. About thirty hectares, located between Pereta and Magliano, are dedicated to the production of Morellino, the typical local red wine, the true ambassador of the Maremma territory in the world. In this area, in addition to Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Alicante are also grown.
Within the estate stand out some vineyards of particular value, dedicated to the production of some of the most important wines in the estate's range. The Saffredi Vineyard is located in the Perata area, 250 meters above sea level with west-facing, northwest exposure, on silty matrix soils with little limestone and clay. There are five hectares dedicated to the cultivation of the international red grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which have acclimated particularly well here. The Vigna di San Vittorio e Vignacci, on the other hand, is home to the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, which have found their ideal habitat on sandy, sandstone-rich soils located at an altitude of about 200-250 meters, with southeastern exposure. Finally, the Poggio Valente Vineyard, characterized by sandy soils located 280 meters above sea level, has proven particularly suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese and Merlot.
