Erste+Neue has been a part of the wine-growing history of the town of Caldaro, or Kaltern in the local language, for more than a century. The merger in 1986 of Caldaro's first cooperative winery, Erste, with Caldaro's new cooperative winery, Neue (founded in 1900 and 1925 respectively) and the further incorporation in 1991 of the Baron Josef winery in Pauli created one of South Tyrol's most prestigious and traditional wineries.
The vineyards of the Erste+Neue winery cover a total of 250 hectares, from the warm, sunny climate of the shores of Lake Kaltern, through the prestigious areas of Tramin and St. Magdalena, to the cool breezes that flow across the plateau at the foot of the Mendel mountain. The geographical location offers soils, exposures and temperature ranges that allow the various South Tyrolean grape varieties to express their character in the best possible way. Today, the vineyard is managed by over 400 members who, under the supervision of the technical staff of enologist Gerhard Sanin, contribute their harvest to the winery every year. Erste+Neue produces its wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Gewürztraminer, Lagrein and Schiava, as well as international varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
The experience of generations and a natural instinct for experimentation ensure that the production of the Erste+Neue winery is undoubtedly of a high profile, expressing the South Tyrolean terroir with great elegance. The successful combination of tradition and modernity, already reflected in the name, make this winery a virtuous cooperative model and a point of reference for those seeking classic South Tyrolean wines at attractive prices. Each glass conveys the history and enthusiasm displayed by the winemakers in their work.
