Cataldo Calabretta is a Calabrian winemaker, who made a family inheritance of an innovative company that stands out in the landscape of ancient and troubled wine production of Calabria. The company is located in Cirò Marina, the territory of Cirò Doc, in the province of Crotone and east of the Ionian Sea: the area has an ancient and glorious past in the culture of wine, which has roots dating back to the colonies of Magna Graecia.
The family Calabretta is devoted to the winemaking for four generations and Cataldo studied the art of wine takind a degree in oenology and viticulture in Milan and gaining experience in several major wineries. Cultivating love for wine and becoming member of FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers), Cataldo has chosen to give a new life to his family’s farm with his sisters. The continuous improvement of work, looking at the environment, in order to focus on the its most colorful shades, has brought Calabretta family to make courageous choices, including economic efforts and hard manual labor in the warm sun of Calabria.
Exemplary is the cultivation of the Gaglioppo grape on the historic hills, through the best, extremely laborious, technique for the climate in which it grows: the sapling. Another highlight of the work of Calabretta family concerns the restored old tanks of the cellar, good for Cirò wine’s aging and maturing. The use of sulfur is very low and the yeasts, the fining or the activators of fermentation have no place in the work of Cataldo.
Precious fruits of their terroir, the wines of Calabretta reflect a philosophy of true love for the land and the origins.
