The small family-run Bonavita winery operates in the territory of Faro, in the province of Messina, an area that the Scarfone family interprets with passion and craftsmanship. The estate, located precisely in Faro Superiore, was officially founded in 2004, the year Giovanni Scarfone picked up the winemaking legacy of his grandfather, who had long been involved in making wine in this corner of paradise in northeastern Sicily. It was by helping his grandfather in the vineyard during the hot summers that Giovanni developed a strong passion for the world of wine, a passion that led the future producer to enroll in agricultural school to study enology. For years, the Scarfone family made wine in a sort of garage located below the family home, except for the opening of the new winery, where Bonavita's wines come to life today.
The Bonavita estate has just 3 hectares of vineyards, arranged on natural terraces that form a beautiful amphitheater overlooking the Strait of Messina, where the constant presence of sea breezes mitigates the area's Mediterranean heat. On these terraces, set at an altitude between 250 and 300 meters above sea level and surrounded by centuries-old oak and chestnut forests, the Scarfone family raises the local varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera. The vines reach up to 80 years of age and are raised according to the principles of certified organic farming, with a view to protecting the health of the environment and biodiversity. Following manual harvesting, the clusters are immediately transferred to the winery, where fermentations take place entirely spontaneously in oak vats or steel tanks, without the use of additives and oenological aids, with prolonged periods of maceration on the skins. Subsequent aging takes place in oak barrels of several passages, cement vats and steel tanks, and the wines never undergo clarification or stabilization operations.
Wines from the Bonavita winery boldly and faithfully express the essence of the Faro terroir, interpreted in the traditional red version and in a surprising rosé guise.
