The Aosta Valley winery Rosset introduces Syrah '870', an intriguing and persuasive expression that combines the freshness of the terroir with the characteristic spiciness of Syrah. The vineyards that supply the grapes for this label come from the commune of Saint-Christophe, the heart of the estate, in the hills north of the city of Aosta. Here, Syrah was among the first varieties to be planted by the winery, at the foot of the imposing Becca di Nona and Monte Emilius mountains.
The Rosset Syrah '870' is made from Syrah grapes grown on soils of moraine origin consisting mainly of sand and silt, also rich in rock. The vines are about 20 years old and are located at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level. Harvesting is usually carried out by hand during the first few days of October and the bunches are then subjected to a short pre-fermentation maceration at a low temperature, aimed at preserving the aromatic heritage of the grapes. Subsequently, the grapes are mash in steel tanks for spontaneous alcoholic fermentation without temperature control, followed by 20 days of post-fermentation maceration. After racking, the mass is decanted into barriques for ageing for a few months before final bottling.
Rosset's Syrah '870' is dark ruby red in colour. The nose unfolds on perceptions of blueberry, redcurrant, wild flowers, liquorice, undergrowth and black pepper, adorned with notes of sweet spices and deep mineral hints of graphite.
