Picolit, produced by the famous Friuli winery Livio Felluga, represents the history and ancient traditions of the area. It is a sweet wine of extraordinary elegance and finesse, known and appreciated internationally for centuries. Almost completely abandoned due to its low productivity, this noble and ancient white grape variety has survived extinction thanks to the commitment and passion of a few Friulian winemakers who wanted to keep alive the custom of its cultivation. It is perfect to taste with some small dry pastries or a board of aged or blue cheeses.
The sweet Picolit wine was born in one of Friuli's most famous wineries. Livio Felluga was a true pioneer of the regional wine renaissance in the name of quality. Always committed to enhancing the terroir of the Colli Orientali, he was able to create a range of labels of excellent quality. Picolit grapes are the fruit of an estate vineyard cultivated on Flysch soils, a soil composed of sedimentations of marl and sandstone of ancient marine origin, very rich in mineral elements. Harvesting occurred in October, and the grapes were carefully destemmed before a short maceration and soft pressing. After decanting, the free-run juice was started in a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation in small French oak barrels. The wine matured for 18 months on the lees in small barrels to gain structure and more complex aromas and then completed the ageing process with another 18 months in the bottle.
Livio Felluga's Picolit dessert wine is a precious jewel of Friuli tradition. This rare native grape variety with low yields and sparse clusters can give wines characterized by a perfect balance between soft sweetness and clear freshness. It has a bright old gold colour and expresses a bouquet reminiscent of white flowers, aromas of candied orange peel, ripe yellow fruit, dehydrated apricot, spicy sensations and medicinal herbs. The sip is dense and rich, suave and enveloping, with great persistence aromas leading to a harmonious, fresh and savoury finish.
