NERO D'AVOLA 'SUGNU IANÒ' BENIAMINO FEDE 2020 DESCRIPTION

Beniamino Fede's Nero d'Avola 'Sugnu Ianò' represents a label with a wrapping, Mediterranean taste produced in Contrada Giurfo, in the municipality of Licodia Eubea, in the south-eastern part of Sicily. In 2009, after retiring, Beniamino Fede decided to start his winemaking project driven by his love for his land. To symbolise his bond with the land, Beniamino chose a wolf on a promontory as the winery's logo, as the name 'Licodia' derives from the ancient Greek 'lyucos', meaning 'wolf'. Instead, the name of this label originates from the nickname of Beniamino's father, Sebastiano, called Iano' by his friends because of the strong accent he had developed after years spent in France.

Beniamino Fede Nero d'Avola 'Sugnu Ianò' expresses Nero d'Avola in purity, an indigenous variety that the producer cultivates on medium-textured soils consisting mainly of clay and limestone. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and dry, windy summers, while the altitude is between 280 and 300 metres above sea level. The grapes, harvested in September, are vinified in red with spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel silos in contact with the skins. The subsequent 10-month maturation also takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is finally bottled and left to rest for at least 6 months before release.

To the eye, the Sicilian Nero d'Avola 'Sugnu Ianò' from small producer Beniamino Fede expresses an intense ruby red colour. The nose proposes vivid hints of small red fruits, sweet spices and cocoa, enriched by pleasant peppery memories. Warm and harmonious on the palate, where good freshness is accompanied by delicate tannins contributing to the rich and complex structure.
